When competition exists, you can count on market forces to do all kinds of nifty things instead of relying on government regulation. Unfortunately, when a group has no competition, they act as a monopoly and are not in the same position as the free market folks.Now, in the specific case of ISPs, not only do many of them operate as a monopoly, but the entrance fee to the market is staggering. That means, in order for someone else to jump into the market, they can't just pay a small amount of money and expect to recoup it in a few years, they need to sink an enormous amount of capital on a risky investment.Finally (deep breath) there's ethical arguments when you start talking about things that people demand >inelastically< (the stuff you want more or less no matter how much it costs). Gasoline, Food, Electricity, most utilities, these are regulated much more strictly because of the nature of the demand.So no, I'm not down on the free market, I think it works great, most of the time. But I also think there are border conditions where perhaps some government intervention isn't the end of the world, because the principles of the free market aren't in play.!
